Compareing my first and second Interview

Compared to my two interviews, the biggest change from the first to second is that I prepared enough. For my first interview, honestly, I just followed those thirteen basic questions, so there are few following up questions showed up. However, when I did my second interview, I could expend my questions which mean I had more following up questions for my interviewee. I think that I feel a little bit nerves and less experience in my first interview. My first interviewee comes from Vietnam which more likes my country’s culture. And my second interviewee comes from Saida Aribia which I am not familiar with their culture. Therefore, I urgented to know more about their culture. Because we both are international students, trying to understand what each other’s want to expression and to catch their key points are very important. When I recorded my first interview, I heard it over and over again, I just trying to find what things I not did well. Something I need to learn is that do not ask they some questions which answer is “yes” or “no”. I need to add more sentences such as “what do you think” or “what is your opinions about it” in front of my questions. Then, interviewee will answer more about these questions. I am very happy because I felt confidence during my second interview. I can ask their questions more fluently. Because I am very nerves at first time, I felt my interviewee may feel boring. But they just have patient to hear what do I asking. I spent 1 hour to record my first interview, and spent 2 hours to record my second interview because I had to look at my dictionary. I think my listening, speaking, and vocabulary have improvement after I interviewed two students. I need to listen very carefully. Before I asked questions I had to think about how I can express my questions simply to understand. All in all, I had a good experience before. I look forward to my third interview.

Second Interview

                                                                    My second interview

1.My preparations
For my first interview, I choose one from Asian countries. I choose one Africa country for my second interview. Based on my previous interview experience, I used my checklist which is very helpful. It helps me not to forget things that I need. I removed one question about religions from my list before I interviewed, because I know Saudi Arabian people have very high sensitivity for this topic. I searched backgrounds on google for my interview preparation.
How did you approach people.
I graduated from the intensive English center last year.  There are many Saudi Arabian students who study there. I contacted one of my writing classmates on facebook to help me do my interview project. He agreed to help me and set up a time.
B. When, where, and how did you conduct and record the interview?
I met him at coffee shop in miller center at march 16,2012 in 2pm. I told him via facebook. I called him in 1:55pm. He fell free if I record him. Our interview took 30 minutes.
C. Whom did you interview?
He name is Abdullah.B. He comes Saudi Arabia. He is an freshman and studies in the  information system major.
. Describe the interview. What did surprise you? How did the interview unfold?

I am not familler with their culture. At first, I just asked him one by one from that thirteen basic questions. he was willing to answer my questions. So we did a very well interview. I notice that in saudi arabian womem is very traditional. They wear long and fat clothings to cover their body and face. Also, women are not allowed to drive car. They couple can’t see each other before they marry.the educational struture is petty much like china and american.

3.Country report

The kingdom of saudi arabia. The government type is Monarchy with Council of Ministers and Consultati(or Shura) Council.

Saudi Arabia has centuries-old attitudes and traditions, often derived from Arab tribal civilization. This culture has been bolstered by the austerely puritanical Wahhabiform of Islam, which arose in the eighteenth century and now predominates in the country. The many limitations on behaviour and dress are strictly enforced both legally and socially. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited, for example, and there is no theatre or public exhibition of films. Public expression of opinion about domestic political or social matters is discouraged. There are no organizations such as political parties or labour unions to provide public forums.

Daily life is dominated by Islamic observance. Five times each day, Muslims are called to prayer from the minarets of mosques scattered throughout the country. Because Friday is the holiest day for Muslims, the weekend begins on Thursday In accordance with Wahhabi doctrine, only two religious holidays are publicly recognized, Īd al-Fir and Īd al-Aḍḥā. Celebration of other Islamic holidays, such as the Prophet’s birthday and Āshūrā (an important holiday for Shīites), are tolerated only when celebrated locally and on a small scale. Public observance of non-Islamic religious holidays is prohibited, with the exception of September 23, which commemorates the unification of the kingdom.

Dress

Saudi Arabian dress strictly follows the principles of hijab (the Islamic principle of modesty, especially in dress). The predominantly loose and flowing, but covering, garments are suited to Saudi Arabia's desertclimate. Traditionally, men usually wear an ankle length shirt woven from wool or cotton (known as a thawb), with a keffiyeh(a large checkered square of cotton held in place by a cord coil) or a ghutra (a plain white square made of finer cotton, also held in place by a cord coil) worn on the head. For rare chilly days, Saudi men wear a camel-hair cloak (bisht) over the top. Women's clothes are decorated with tribal motifs, coins, sequins, metallic thread, and appliques. Women are required to wear an abaya or modest clothing when in public

(2) Interview report

3. Report on country/region and culture:
Vietnam is located on the eastern Indochina Peninsula between the latitudes 8° and 24°N, and the longitudes 102° and 110°E. It covers a total area of approximately 331,210 km2 (127,881 sq mi),Vietnam's land is mostly hilly and densely forested, with level land covering no more than 20%. Mountains account for 40% of the country's land area, and tcover around 42%.The Socialist Republic of Vietnam is a single-party state. The official national language of Vietnam is Vietnamese, a tonal monosyllabic Mon–Khmer language which is spoken by the majority of the population.

For much of Vietnamese history, Mahayana Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism have been the dominant religions, strongly influencing the national culture. The Vietnamese government rejects allegations that it does not allow religious freedom. The state's official position on religion is that all citizens are free to their belief, religion and that all religions are equal before law.Nevertheless, only government-controlled religious organisations are allowed; for example, the South Vietnam-founded Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam is banned in favour of a communist-approved body.

Vietnam's culture has developed over the centuries from indigenous ancient  culture with wet rice agriculture as its economic base.
